Here is our guide to the best Porto day trips.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-20192 size-large\" src=\"\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Porto-Casa-de-Serralves-620x413.jpg\" alt=\"Porto Park\" width=\"620\" height=\"413\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Serralves Museum &amp; Villa <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A short bus journey within the city itself,<strong> along the famous Avenida da Boavista will take you to the Serralves Museum &amp; Villa<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.serralves.pt\/en\/museum\/the-museum\/\">The Serralves Foundation<\/a> brings the best of <strong>modern and contemporary art<\/strong> to Portugal&#8217;s northern city, with regularly changing exhibitions. A walk in the park and to the villa is a very enjoyable way to spend the day after you\u2019ve seen the latest exhibition. From the museum <strong>head to Matosinhos or Foz beach<\/strong>, minutes away by bus, for some sea air and freshly-caught fish for dinner.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20193 alignnone\" src=\"\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/guimares.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Guimar\u00e3es<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>A short train ride from Porto S\u00e3o Bento or Campanh\u00e3 stations<\/strong> you will find Guimar\u00e3es with buildings dating back to the middle ages. <strong>Known as the birthplace of Portugal<\/strong>, a visit here must include a visit to the castle for its breath-taking views of the city. Take the cable car to <strong>Monte da Penha<\/strong> for more stunning views on high or simply stroll around the town with its pretty <strong>squares such as Largo da Oliveira and Pra\u00e7a de Santiago<\/strong>, where you will really feel like you have stepped back in time to medieval Portugal with the backdrop of buildings that surround you.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-20194 alignnone\" src=\"\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/braga.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Braga<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Braga is also easy to reach by train. Once you are there, <strong>visit the town\u2019s cathedral, which is actually older than Portugal as a country itself<\/strong>. <em>The S\u00e9<\/em> as it is called in Portuguese, was the first one to be built in the whole of Portugal, with construction starting in the 11th century. The parents of the first Portuguese King are buried here. Slightly outside of the city (reachable by car or local bus) is the wonderful <strong>Bom Jesus do Monte church<\/strong>. It sits atop a climb of 630 steps (if you\u2019re feeling energetic) or at the end of a short ride up the hill in a <strong>water powered funicular lift<\/strong> \u2013 the oldest in Europe. It\u2019s a fun way to reach the top and <strong>the views are definitely worth it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-20195 size-full\" src=\"\/en\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/douro-valley.jpg\" alt=\"Douro Valley\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Douro Valley<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Steeped in tradition, <strong>the Douro Valley is a spectacle to behold<\/strong>, and is one of the best day trips from Porto. Within its steep, step-like vineyards grow Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca grapes, the main grapes used in the <strong>Porto\u2019s famous Port wine<\/strong>. There is a wide choice of vineyard tours available at the many quintas in the valley. In Pinh\u00e3o, Quinta da Rosa is popular as is Quinta do Seixo in Vila Real. You can reach this area by car or by train \u2013 both methods of transport offer stunning views en route.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Amarante.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Small but beautiful<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The pretty town of Amarante which <strong>sits alongside the River T\u00e2mega<\/strong> is a lovely place to see in one day. Head here for the market on Wednesdays and Fridays, riverside views and quaint shopping streets. <strong>The Igreja de S\u00e3o Gon\u00e7alo<\/strong> allows visits to see its historic interior before heading across the river over one of the town\u2019s bridges.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Peneda-Ger\u00eas National Park is a well-kept Portuguese secret<\/strong>, enjoyed by the Portuguese all year round.
