Recent visit to Catalonia Costa Mujeres
Out stay was very good except for the windows and doors leaking from the rain. Also the infinity room 2401 was very hot. The room could benefit from a ceiling fan as the other room has one.

A very good resort with a few caveats
Overall our stay at Catalonia Costa Mujeres was good. There are enough activities, drinks, food, and variety to the establishments that even after 4 days we could still encounter something new to enjoy. If you have a family or want to just spend a couple of days in a laid back land-locked cruise (with good food!) instead of the 24/7 party vibes of Cancun, this resort is a good choice. The great: The food was good to great! This was our first time at an all inclusive, and we'd heard stories of Cancun buffets being lukewarm or unappetizing, but whether it was the buffet or a themed restaurant, the food was always on point--when in doubt get the fish or Mexican food options (also will say, I feel like a silly tourist writing this but the hamburgers at Catalonia Burgers were genuinely great). The layout of the hotel was easy to understand enough that our seven year old could navigate it with confidence. Between splashing about in the pools, building miniature Chechin Itzas on the beach, and hanging out in the teen room playing pool and air hockey, there was plenty for our family to enjoy. The grounds certainly looked and felt fancy to us, and it was simple to get anything we needed--towels, food, drinks. We spotted several iguanas on the grounds basking in the sun, and even a feral tabby cat hunting a pigeon on our way to an early breakfast (the pigeon got away). I don't know if this is standard in all rooms but we had a walk-in mud closet which was an incredible convenience. Just take off the wet swimsuits, wring them out and hang them on hangers in the mudroom and they'd be mostly dry by morning, and totally out of sight--a vast improvement over hanging them over the tub or off the curtain rails. The places to improve: - It felt like the front of hotel staff were not listening to us with issues. We arrived and found we'd gotten a room with double beds instead of a bunk bed for the kids, and asked to change. They said they'd get back to us about changing but never did (If your room type has mutliple layouts, I recommend trying to request before you get there, maybe it will help). This by itself was not a big deal, I understand they're booked up and can't just magically make occupancy less. However there was then issues with the door lock. The first morning of our stay, we ended up locked out of our rooms for a few minutes, cold and clammy in the hallway as pool water dried and every member of the family tried their wristbands again and again to try to open the door. No beeps, no noise, nothing. Somehow on the second pass, the door responded our youngest's wristband and we were able to get in. We reported the problem to the front office, they said it can happen sometimes with the room battery, and that they'd send someone to replace it. Our wristbands worked fine after that so we assumed it was fixed...until the same thing happened again the next day. The front office sent someone to open up the room and again they promised to fix the door battery. Later that same day, it happened for the third time--then my wife waited at the front office until they sent a repairman with her. After replacing the batery we had no more issues, but we were very wary of getting locked out again for the rest of the trip. - Rainwater leaked in from the living area windows. There was a storm in the middle of the trip where it rained hard and persistantly--we had lunch, played out in the pool in the rain, and came back to 2cm standing water in a 30cm wide puddle in front of the main windows in the room. It appear to have seeped in from the seals on the bottom, because the inside part of the window was not wet. Fortunately we didn't have anything in the area, but if we'd had a room with beds near the window, or had been using the space for suitcases, they'd easily have been soaked. As it was the bottom of the curtains were soaking wet for the rest of the trip. - The food reservation system feels bad. It was commented on by many other reviewers, but it was still shocking to find that the popular restaurants (Grill and Ayami) would basically fill up bookings 2 days out the moment they opened. When you're on vacation for 4+ days at least you have an opportunity to try again the next day, but if not, you're out of luck. We had a priveleged room because it was the only one left available at booking which meanty Bloved was open to us, and that was nice, but if we didn't have that option, then it's only al fresco seating at the places along 5th Avenue, or the buffet; though those options were good or even great, as a customer it feels like I've "missed out" if I don't get into one of the fancier places. - Surprisingly the matresses were cheap-feeling spring mattresses. We had no trouble sleeping on them, so it worked out fine. However in recent memory I haven't stayed at even a business hotel that didn't have at least a memory foam topper. Since this was our first time in Cancun I don't know if this was something to do with fancier mattresses soaking up humidity or something. But when I sat on the bed and heard that familiar metal creak I felt like I'd been transported back to every Holiday Inn I'd ever stayed at on family road trips as a kid, as opposed to the lap of luxury in a five-star resort. Tips for people thinking of coming: - Bring 3 pairs of shoes - water shoes, sandals, and close-toed sneakers or better for the fancier restaurants. Your water shoes will stay damp the entire trip - bring sandals for those short trips to lunch or to grab a drink where you might get rained on. - Bring pesos for tips. Almost universally the staff was genuinely pleased to get a tip for their hard work, and would offer to make our drinks doubles, or stuff the snack drawer and fridge with goodies, or have some plesant chit-chat. There's no ATM on the premises and the front staff can't exchange foreign currency to pesos, though they can break a 200 or 100 to smaller denominations. - Bring insulated mugs. You get more drink and it stays cool longer, which means less time waiting in line for another one. - Costa Mujeres is, relatively speaking, isolated. You can still get excurions like Xcaret, Xel-Ha or your standard Chetchin Itza tour to pickup at the hotel, which is nice--at 7am there was a parade of tour buses coming through the entrance. But transfers to and from the airport are a little more expensive, and of course it's a bit of a trip to get into Cancun proper. Overall thoughts: We had a good time at this resort. It was fun and memorable and had good food and drinks, and the public areas felt fancy and well kept. We enjoyed lots of lounging by the pool or the beach and even getting rained on frequently. I would ask their front office to be more responsive to issues, otherwise it just feels like they might be blowing customers off, and also to look in to if there is a better way to handle reservations to the sit-down restaurants. But there wasn't any big fuss about not having enough towels or food being cold or bland, or it being too loud past 11PM, or any of the things you might read about for similar resorts in Cancun proper. Obviously this might not appeal to everyone's tastes but it was just right for our family.

This time, reservations for the themed restaurants were already open for the next 3 days upon our arrival. That puts newly arrived guests, specially if you are going to stay for 3 nights (like ourselves) at a disadvantage. We could hardly find space, and ended up going to where we could, rather than where we wanted to go. I would suggest that you open reservations for the same day everyday, as before. It would make it more fair for everyone.
